Verano Canal is one of the most iconic cultural festivals of the season in Panama City, held on the steps of the Panama Canal Administration Building in Ancon. For its 2026 edition, reURBE led the event’s sustainability strategy on behalf of Istmo Co. and the Panama Canal Authority, bringing together two complementary components under a single approach to cultural change. The first was ReACT, a behavioral change pilot designed to promote recycling and sustainable mobility through gamification: attendees earned points for actions such as recycling properly, arriving at the event via public transportation, or consuming responsibly, which could be redeemed for promotional prizes from the Canal. reURBE comprehensively led the initiative, from the design of the challenges and incentive mechanics to the technological coordination of the platform. The second component addressed the festival’s operational chain by implementing sustainability guidelines for the 75 participating food stalls, accompanied by two training sessions designed and facilitated by reURBE to help micro-entrepreneurs incorporate best practices during the event. This project demonstrates how large-scale events can become active platforms for promoting sustainable habits, not only through messaging but also through designed experiences that engage attendees and operators as agents of change.
